Homeless Mission
In
1999, the Faith Communities and Civic Agencies United [FCCAU] was
formed and established the Emergency Winter Shelter Program for the
homeless in Harford County. FCCAU is a faith based, nonprofit coalition
of Harford County churches and government agencies that addresses this
serious gap in social services in Harford County. For several years
from October through April churches volunteered to host the homeless
and provide shelter, meals, transportation, supervision, showers,
laundry services, and most importantly to share God's love. In
October 2006, a permanent shelter facility opened in Riverside.
Now county churches provide drivers, meals and hosts at that facility.
Churchville Presbyterian Church joined the FCCAU in 2002
and has hosted the homeless in our Fellowship Hall and now provides
those services at the permanent shelter. Typically, more than 60% of
active members participated in this mission. In addition, Churchville
Presbyterian Church supports FCCAU in our Benevolence offering. The
Peace, Justice and Mission Committee sponsors the Homeless Mission at
Churchville Presbyterian Church.
In his book, "The Purpose
Driven Life," Rick Warren identifies mission as one of the five
purposes for our lives. In Mathew 25:31-46 we are told that when Christ
comes again in all His glory we will be judged based upon whether we
provided food, drink, shelter, and clothing to those in need and
ministered to the sick and visited people in prison. Churchville
Presbyterian Church is answering Christ's call to share God's love,
bounty, mercy and grace with the homeless in this hands-on mission.
